Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
